Thanksgiving....No Thanks

In the traditional sense.

I don't know the history behind Thanksgiving, and really I don't care.
I just know that since I was a little girl, it's the weirdo holiday that falls between Halloween and Christmas. In school we made turkey paintings from our handprints, and colored pages of smiling pilgrims in crisp black and white garb.

I am not going to get into the fact that really all of the holidays we celebrate here in the US are pretty lame. I say, if you want a reason to celebrate and liquor is flowing; sweet, do it. But I REALLY don't get Thanksgiving. Christmas can either be a time to spend with family and give commercially jammed down your throat gifts, blah blah blah and be celebrated pretty secularly, or you can do it up big like the Christians by placing plastic infants in wooden cribs surrounded by barnyard animals everywhere. Either way, it seems like a "holiday."

But what the hell is Thanksgiving about? Hey a bunch of white people came over here to eff it up for the Native Americans, LET'S PARTY! Whoo Hoo. I mean really?

Oh and hold on to your feathers turkeys, because we are going to make you the center of the she-bang. We love you so much that we are going to inject you with water, hormones and sodium phosphate to make sure you are big enough to feed our fat faces as well as tasty enough for our fast food-centric palettes.

Now after spewing all that hate let me just say that though I think these things, I have up till now participated (sans any sort of meat eating) in said event. So I can't really bash anyone but my own dang self. So this year I have made the decision to do something different.

Tomorrow, I will be volunteering at a local shelter feeding the homeless along with Miss Riot at my side. I will also not be traveling to see the family. Not that I dislike my family, but the whole things is just so centered around food I will not eat, I don't see the point. I am going to make dinner (vegan, organic) for Travis, JR and some other friends. We will drink and laugh it up just as we would on any other day that we have a long weekend (4th of July, Flag Day...whatever).

I like the decision I have made. No I'm not saving the world. I'm not even making a difference in it; I just made a decision for myself instead of being steered by the force of the sheep.

Didn't I say that online contests were lame?

Considering this was the winner of the "Best Evanescence inspired style" contest...yeah.

Oh well, I guess that's what I get competing in the 16-22 year old arena. I think I am the one that's lame, not the geniuses behind the concept of Sugarloot and probably banking on lots of advertising dollars. \

Congrats "Heather", have fun in New York.

Glimmer

Yesterday I saw a photo of a girl that I have seen a million times. The difference was that though I know this girl backwards and forwards, the way she looked stirred a little something in me. I saw her beauty and how absolutely captivating she really is. It made me think about something. It made me realize THIS is how a lover feels when they see their girlfriend, wife, husband, boyfriend everyday yet something about them on that day or in that moment causes those fresh, raw feelings of attraction to reemerge.

Though I know that feeling, it was weird to recognize it in someone of the same sex that I am not remotely involved with. It was almost like seeing a moment between a couple from an aerial view. It's hard to explain, but it gave me a little glimmer of hope for long-term relationships. Things are good now, but I guess it was invigorating to see how they can continue to ignite fires into the long night ahead.

Countdown

I began compiling a list of "Changes, experiences and other notions of 2007" in my head a couple of months ago. I will be posting that come december. This week will have a lot to do with that list.

NWARG recently dissolved the two inner league teams they had to form an All Star Team and another team to represent us from here on out. Both teams will be traveling, etc. but we will no longer have to play inner league games, we will only be playign leagues outside of NWA, which will be a lot more fun.

Miss Riot was re-elected as the Backwoods Betties captain and I was elected as her superhero friend (I am Robin). I hope we do a good job. I really want the girls to have faith in us, and for us to always be a good voice as well as a good ear.

We are in current uniform discussions which will lead up to team photo discussions. Can't wait for photos!

Jay has been elected as the league coach. He will be coaching both teams for the the 2008 season and I think it's going to be a very good move for NWARG.

We learned a ton at the KC bootcamp, and that's ALL we have been practicing. Edging, power-skating, edging, power-skating, wash rinse, repeat.

In rest of Sin's world things are good as well. Travis is rocking it out daily on the bass and has a show in December with his band, Dirt Mother. The pugs are well (does well include fat?) The cats are well (see previous question) and work is still awesome.

I can honestly say I am pretty sick of graphics for pay. I love doing derby graphics, but that's about it. I wish I could just do web development for the paper and forgo the graphic end of my job, but for now....that's the second part of what I do here.

Skater Review: Girls buy these wheels! They are badass!

I have never loved a wheel so much in my life.

Also skate related. Laces are where it's at. Check Lacing Methods. I am currently rocking the Loop Back.

Over & out.

Excuse me!

So I was giving a little advice to a friend tonight on an HTML class she is taking. Through some talk about how tables are lame, I sent her my favorite argument site for why tables blow and CSS rocks the house

Anyone contemplating why this is the case, or want all of the arguments packaged up with fun little retro graphics should visit this site.

Sometimes when I am trying to read through some crazy tr,td, tr td, bullshit it makes me want to throw up a little. The same way I get when I see most photoshop filters rendered by the hands of newbies or good old comic sans font.

Excuse me, I think I just geeked on you. Here let me wipe that off.

Weekend Wrap-Up

No photos. Sorry.

Friday night JR and I headed to the Boom Boom Room to see a ton of my friends/bands.
The New Tragedies played. They were amazing as usual. Beautiful harmonies always. Damn I love this band. Afterwards The Good Fear rocked it up. It had been a long time since I last saw them, and now I am kicking myself for not getting out more. We left a little early because I was tired as hell, but it was really good to see lots of people I haven't seen in months.

Saturday I began a project that lasted until last night. The great closet clean-out. I took everything out of our closet, trashed some things, pulled out items good enough to give away, and separated out all the warm weather stuff from what I will be wearing from now till February. Now I have huge pile of shoe boxes I have to recycle Wednesday. I need more shoe racks. I dream of a custom closet. Maybe someday.

Saturday morning Travis and I had lunch at El Camino and then went to the Apple dealer here to get a new keyboard (hot) and a new mouse. Jesster, Jay and I hit up Roller City that night where wood floors are sexy. It was a lot of fun, save little children that should have never been born. Can't wait to move back there as of January. It will be nice to not drive 30 minutes twice a week and to not feel like I am skating on ice. (our current venue has concrete floors)

Sunday was lazy. Worked in the matrix for hours early morning, Jesster came over and dyed my hair. Travis headed off to meeeeeetal practice with Dirt Mother and I went to derby practice. Great practice. It's nice to sweat and feel like I am accomplishing something. Trying really hard to improve my form. Hope by the end of 2008 I will look like I know what I am doing. :)

Halloween.....really?

Because it sure didn't feel like it. I went home, called in take out Thai food. Picked it up and then began to get sleepy.

Miss Riot was dead set on us going out, so she talked me into it.Travis stayed home.

We went to the final party at the Zion house. It actually was pretty fun, even though I could have conceivably given birth to two thirds of the people there considering their age. Lawd.

Cute girls everywhere, but I seriously think most were just now dawning training bras and getting braces off.

Music was played, nakedness ensued (not be me) and then I got sleepy. We packed it up about 1:30 and headed home.

Best thing that happened: Got to hang with Riot.
Worst thing slash maybe funniest thing:

Dude dressed like Teen Wolf: "So don't you bar tend at (insert random bar name)?"
Sin: Nope.
DDLTW: Ahhh, hmmm well I guess I don't have anything to talk to you about."
Sin: Right.
DDLTW: "So is that your costume?" (I was wearing regular clothes)
Sin: Nope.
DDLTW: "Oh...I thought maybe being hott was your costume."
Sin: Blink, blink........ummmm nope.
DDLTW: Stands up and leaves.

Here's the duo headed out for the evening:

Me with tattoo arm connected to my body (the previous photos were just of tattoo)

Not sure of what camera part got into the photo (strap?)
